T+M Observation log

Updated: Mar 29, 2020

King's Cross Train Station observations:

  • Women hauling suitcase hurrily to platform 11.

  • Old man sat next to two old ladies on his phone. Now he is having his lunch - some sort of pastry.

  • Middle aged lady and much older man just left their with pillows or newly bought duvet in plastic carry case.

  • Maybe 200 or 300 ppl waiting for their train times to pop up on large screen at lower level. Most of these people seem to be adult individuals or couples - lack of groups and families. Some people (those not in a rush) also waiting for this on upper sat relaxed on chairs, eating to pass time.

  • No seats left upper deck as everyone waiting for trains/meeting people at the stations and eating as it was close to lunch time - maybe also to pass long waiting times.

  • Old man with cap shading eyes to read train time sat nearby on upper deck. He begins to leave the upper deck once the flock of people downstairs have slowed down. Could be a sign that he is an experienced 'train-traveller' - knows when it is the right time to catch train without the rush of people. But may be meeting someone who just arrived as he did not have a suitcase but a laptop parcel bag.

  • Guy in neon builder jacket walking through crowd with suitcase amongst the crowd of people on lower level. Looks like he is in a rush to get outside yet is constantly glancing at train times screen.

  • At 11.43 the huge crowd of people downstairs, stood eyeballing the train times on the huge screens towards platforms 0-8, quickly begin rushing towards the ticketing gates at once, signalling an arrival of a departure.

  • Women with large blue suitcase sat next to on the upper level leaves, to presumably catch her train after the rush has started to slow down, as the flock of people downstairs begin to decrease.

  • At 11.50 the rest of the crowd move through the gates, accumulating in a fairly large chaos. A sign that a train is due to depart.

  • 11.50-11.51: Beepingnoise nearby from presumably Costa."Sir can I help you" "is that all?"

  • Family of mother, daughter and grandmother sat behind me. Mother brushing young daughters hair while she sits on a suitcase. Irish "it's just a normal bobble" "massive queue at the trolly bit".

  • Putting red bow in daughter's hair. When I look back I find out there are two other women, the grandma's friend perhaps and the mother's sister.

Conservation afterwards:

  • Everyone had similar outcomes mainly because we visited similar waiting areas within the stations - more relaxed areas.

  • Interesting to hear about platform 9 3/4. People waiting to take photo in Harry Potter scene. Weird mood because people in queue were apperantly quite quiet as a staff member was shouting instructions. Queue was near doorway - people were cold and just wanted to get to somewhere warm.

  • Difference between people coming in and out train station. People coming out were more relaxed and less rushed as they had finished their jounrey. Some people were waiting around for a taxi/Uber - the next stage of the journey

  • We agreed that most people waiting to board a train were just on their phone focusing on getting the right train and therefore would not be so bothered about a calming video. How would/could I affect this? Could I distract people or disengage them from their personal devices? No phone restriction - depends on waiting room/appointment. QR codes or pop ups...but who would want to use them or even read/pay attention to the pop up?
